Golf betting: Rory McIlroy is the big favorite ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship

Rory McIlroy's odds have gotten longer but he’s still a big favorite for the Wells Fargo Championship this weekend.

McIlroy opened at +800 and is now at +900 at BetMGM to win the tournament that begins Thursday. No other golfer has better odds than +2000 as McIlroy, Tony Finau (+2200), and Abraham Ancer (+3000) are the only three golfers entered in the tournament who are in the top 20 of the World Golf Rankings.

The tournament is being held at TPC Potomac in Potomac, Maryland, instead of at Quail Hollow in Charlotte because Quail Hollow is set to host the Presidents Cup later this year.

McIlroy is making his first start in nearly a month. McIlroy’s last start came at the Masters where he finished second after shooting a final-round 64 that included an amazing birdie from the bunker on No. 18. Before the Masters, McIlroy missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open and finished 33rd and 13th after a 10th-place finish at the Genesis Invitational.

Corey Conners is the No. 2 favorite to McIlroy at +2000 and is getting the most bets and the most money ahead of McIlroy. Conners is getting 10% of the bets to win the tournament and those bets make up 13.1% of the money. McIlroy is No. 2 in both categories with 8.2% of bets and 13.1% of the handle.

The third-most bet player is Cameron Young at +4000. He’s getting 5.8% of bets and 6.4% of the handle.

McIlroy is +200 to finish in the top five and -110 to get a top 10 while Conners is at +400 for a top five and +200 for a top 10.

Finau is the favorite to finish as the top American in the tournament at +1400 ahead of Russell Henley at +1600 and Keegan Bradley at +1800. Conners is better than even money to be the top Canadian at -136 while McIlroy is at +300 to be the top European. Marc Leishman is the favorite at +190 ahead of Jason Day (+300) to be the top Australian and Si Woo Kim at +240 is the favorite to be the top Asian.
