Ezequiel Lavezzi, the former Paris St-Germain and Argentina striker, was rushed to hospital after being wounded at a house party he hosted in Uruguay.

Reports in the city of Punta del Este say he suffered “a short puncture wound in his abdomen and a fracture at the level of his collarbone.”

It was claimed locally he suffered a possible stabbing, but family members disputed that version of events, saying instead he fell while changing a lightbulb. Argentinian journalist Germán García Grova reports that relatives say he fell from a ladder and “hit a piece of furniture.”

Police arriving at the scene to investigate what happened have confirmed only that Lavezzi suffered an injury to his shoulder blade. Clarin, the biggest-read newspaper in Argentina, says the “confusing episode” took place on Tuesday morning. A medical report is pending to find out his state of health.

Reports in South America say the ex-Argentina forward was taken to the Punta del Este hospital in Uruguay. FM Gente report he has been admitted to hospital alongside his girlfriend. It was around 5am when emergency services received a distress call. Following that, he was swiftly transported to the Cantegril Clinic in Punta del Este.

“The severity of the situation that the 38-year-old former soccer player is going through is unknown,” reports Clarin.

As well as Ligue 1’s PSG, Lavezzi played for Genoa and Napoli in Serie A but retired in 2020, last playing for Chinese side Hebei FC. His stay in the Far East had initially been controversial as he apologised in 2017 for pulling the corner of his eyes in pictures taken for the Chinese Super League.

Lavezzi said that he had “no intention of insulting the Chinese people”, and was simply making funny faces at the request of the photographer.
