Lisone late show earns Warriors 24-20 win over Knights
Sam Lisone scored a late try as New Zealand Warriors mounted a brilliant comeback to beat Newcastle Knights 24-20 in a thrilling NRL encounter on Saturday.
The Warriors were second best in the first half, but were in superb form after the interval in the round 16 clash at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Sione Mata'utia's well-worked try and a second from Lachlan Fitzgibbon had the home side ahead 12-2 at half-time, but Peta Hiku dragged the Warriors back into it in the 44th minute.
Parity was restored four minutes later - Ken Maumalo sliding over for his first try following some slick build-up play down the left.
Maumalo followed that effort up with an even better score soon after, lunging over to acrobatically ground the ball just before he was knocked into touch.
The video referee denied Maumalo a hat-trick in the 66th minute and the official's call looked to have proved costly for the Warriors when Mata-utia scored, with Mason Lino adding the extras.
But Lisone proved the hero with three minutes remaining, as he capitalised on Connor Watson's error to bundle over and - despite a late Knights onslaught - the Warriors held firm to secure a hard-earned victory.
