Cas hold off Wakefield to win thrilling derby

Castleford Tigers withstood a brave Wakefield Trinity fightback to win a thrilling Super League Yorkshire derby 28-26 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

A week on from a disappointing reverse at Huddersfield Giants, Cas were back to winning ways on home turf but only after seeing Wakefield almost overturn an 18-point half-time deficit.

Cas came storming out of the blocks as James Clare scored twice either side of Jesse Sene-Lefao dotting down.

Cory Aston scored a try on a debut to stretch the lead to 22-0 before Mason Caton-Brown put Wakefield's first points on the board before the break.

Greg Minikin stretched Cas' lead with a powerful try from close-rage, but the visitors came back with a flurry of scores from Caton-Brown, Joe Arundel, Ben Reynolds and Tinirau Arona.

Wakefield fell two points short, though, and remain fourth in the table behind Cas in third.

In Thursday's other fixture, Catalans Dragons battered lowly London Broncos 39-6 on their travels – Matt Whitley scoring twice, with Lewis Tierney, Greg Bird, Arthur Romano and Sam Tomkins also registering tries.
