Smith humbled by 'surreal' NRL points record

Cameron Smith described the moment he claimed the NRL points record from Hazem El Masri as "humbling" and "surreal" on Friday.

The Melbourne Storm icon moved past El Masri's total of 2,418 points with three goals in his side's win over North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville.

A penalty kick eight minutes after half-time saw Smith claim top spot on the all-time list and he was able to reflect on his emotions following the game, having initially considered spurning an attempt at the posts to instead push for more points.

"I did have a moment, thinking please don't miss this," he told Fox Sports. "I didn't want to wait any longer. It was nice to see it go through the sticks.

"I thought we had a bit of momentum over the Cowboys and I actually wanted to run the ball. I hesitated for a moment there to take the two - I thought we could go on and get a four-pointer.

"But I think the big fella upstairs [Storm coach Craig Bellamy] wanted the two points. He's fairly conservative and we took it.

"It's just nice to break it and it's a special moment. It's hard to take it in while you're playing. You're out here for another 25 minutes.

"But it's quite a humbling moment for me to be the highest points scorer in the history of our game. It's quite surreal going past a legend like Hazem El Masri, who was just a magician with the boot.

"Being around the top of that table is quite surreal. It's very humbling and a special night obviously."

Smith was less enthused by Melbourne's performance, though, adding: "It was a very tough win - just like last week's match. We didn't help ourselves.

"The ball control was just 45 per cent in the first half, which saps the energy and it's really hard to do a lot of defence up here in Townsville with the heat and the intensity which we're not used to.

"Effort got us the victory. It's pleasing to know that we've always got effort, but I'd like to see the team use a little more skill, a little more smarts going forward."
