Mellor hat-trick helps Giants hold off Cas in thriller

Alex Mellor scored a hat-trick as Huddersfield Giants fended off Castleford Tigers 20-18 in an enthralling Super League contest at the John Smith's Stadium.

In a match that swung this way and that, Mellor's final unconverted score 11 minutes from time proved crucial in helping the Giants jump out of the bottom four.

Mellor duly responded with his first try and, although Cas led by two at the break, he touched down again shortly after the interval.

The visitors edged back ahead when Matt Cook powered through, before a couple of Darnell McIntosh goals for Huddersfield were answered by Peter Mata'utia for Cas.

There was one more twist in the tale, though, when Mellor completed his hat-trick and a late yellow card for Adam Milner further hindered the Tigers.
