Royals star Perez to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery
Kansas City Royals All-Star Salvador Perez will miss the 2019 MLB season as he prepares to undergo Tommy John surgery.
Perez – a six-time All-Star – will go under the knife on Wednesday to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament.
A 2015 World Series champion and five-time Gold Glove Award winner, Perez will be sidelined until 2020, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
Perez suffered an undisclosed injury to his right elbow last Wednesday and according to an initial report, Tommy John surgery was on the table but was not necessary.
The 28-year-old later sought the second opinion of Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, who confirmed he would undergo the procedure.
Perez has a career slash line of .266/.297/.442 and has averaged almost 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in his eight-year MLB career.
He has caught 35 per cent of attempted base-stealers and has a career .995 fielding percentage.
