AEK through to Champions League playoffs despite defeat
Basketball Champions League holders AEK are through to the playoffs with four games to spare despite seeing their unbeaten run ended by Brose Bamberg.
The Greek side had won their last eight games in the competition but were finally beaten 77-73 by their Group C rivals on Tuesday.
However, they can still celebrate progression from the group stage after Lietkabelis lost 78-71 to CEZ Nymburk and Montakit Fuenlabrada slumped to a 73-59 defeat to JDA Dijon, those results keeping them five points clear of the bottom four sides in the eight-team group, with AEK guaranteed at least four more points.
Iberostar Tenerife, champions in 2017, are not quite sure of a playoff spot despite a 72-66 victory over Fribourg Olympic, Davin White helping them win it in the final minute and Colton Iverson tallying 23 points and 11 rebounds in his first Champions League double-double.
They lead Group B from Umana Reyer Venezia, who eased to a 102-81 win over Opava, while PAOK brushed aside UNET Holon 92-77.
SIG Strasbourg's hopes in a tight Group D were dented by a 69-64 defeat to Besiktas Sompo Japan, who were led by 28 points from Jason Rich. Elsewhere, in Group A Sidigas Avellino came through 72-62 against Anwil to bolster their playoff aspirations.
