Ovechkin joins rare NHL club with second straight hat-trick

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin broke new ground in the NHL on Friday.

The Capitals left wing tallied his 22nd career hat-trick in Washington's 6-5 shoot-out victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

If that sounds familiar, it is because he had a hat-trick in his last game, against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

Ovechkin became just the 14th NHL player to record hat-tricks in consecutive games more than once in his career. He also managed the feat in October 2017.

According to the NHL, Ovechkin is the first new member of that elite club since Alex Kovalev, who had back-to-back hat-tricks twice in 2001.

Ovechkin now has 28 goals in 31 games this season.
