While that England World Cup glow still just about flickers, Harry Maguire probably remains one of the top five most beloved people in the nation right now. Just behind Gareth Southgate, Sir David Attenborough, Holly Willoughby and that meerkat that says “simples”.

So why not make the most of it and seal a record-breaking £65m move to Manchester United?

This, according to the Mail on Sunday, is the plan that Jose Mourinho has for the slab-headed defender, with the Red Devils manager allegedly “considering” an offer that would make Maguire the second-most expensive defender in the history of the universe.

Leicester City are understandably keen to keep hold of the man they signed from Hull last summer for £17m and have offered to increase his wages to £75,000 a week.

The 25-year-old could earn a lot more than that by moving to Old Trafford, although the Mail adds that United would first have to sell a centre-back before launching such an extravagant raid for Maguire.

That would most likely be Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling, who have been “subject to inquiries”, or Phil Jones, who has not.

Leicester are said to be preparing bids for Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, just in case Maguire is lured north.

Chelsea will not accept £170m for Eden Hazard

Chelsea have warned Real Madrid they will “not be bullied” into selling Eden Hazard, reports the Sunday Mirror. It’s not exactly clear what “not being bullied” entails but the tabloid says the Blues will refuse all offers for Hazard – even up to £170m.

Presumably this means they are willing to be bullied into accepting offers over £170m.

Roman Abramovich much prefers to bully others, and he will have a go at this by lodging an offer for Man Utd’s unsettled forward Anthony Martial.

The Sunday Times says Chelsea and Bayern Munich are both keen on the Frenchman but neither is willing to meet United’s £89m valuation of the player.

There is also a potential hitch to Abramovich’s plan revealed in the Daily Star Sunday, which says Martial is set to get a contract extension at Old Trafford because “Mourinho believes he can be a star”. If only he believed it enough to put Martial in his first team.

Arsenal are going goalkeeper crazy, with the Sunday Express claiming the Gunners are in “advanced talks” to sign Borussia Monchengladbach’s Swiss No.1 Yann Sommer, despite having already signed Bernd Leno and retaining Petr Cech and David Ospina in their ranks.

Elsewhere, Manchester City are lining up an £89m bid for Juventus’ 28-year-old Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic (Tuttosport), Atletico Madrid have approached Chelsea about taking World Cup-winning striker Olivier Giroud on loan (Sky Sports) and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has promised manager Rafa Benitez a £100m kitty if he signs a new three-year deal at St James’ Park (Sun on Sunday). It’s not clear whether that is to spend in the transfer market or in Sports Direct.
