Jordan Pickord 10/10: Virtual spectator for the first half but preserved England’s lead in the second half with a series of great saves. First he had to react smartly to keep out a thumping Marcus Berg header, then he got down to keep out a powerful shot from Viktor Claesson before he tipped another Berg shot over the bar.

Kieran Trippier 7/10: Once again one of England’s main attacking threats with his delivery from the right flank often dangerous. It was his cross which forced the corner that England scored from.

Kyle Walker 6/10: The converted fullback’s pace was rarely required as the Swedes largely played in front of England. Didn’t put a foot wrong and did well to shelve his attacking instincts.

John Stones 6/10: Composed on the ball once again but was part of a defence that looked a little shaky as Sweden cranked up the pressure in the second half.

Harry Maguire 8/10: What a stage to score your first international goal. And what a goal it was – his thumping header left the Swedish defence no chance. Always a threat at set piece. At the back his size and physicality saw him dominate in the air.

Jordan Henderson 7/10: Went about his job with the minimum of fuss, breaking up play and passing the ball around. Should have set up England’s second but his glorious ball was wasted by Raheem Sterling.

Jesse Lingard 6/10: Like his teammates, he made a nervous start but he grew into the game and along with Sterling was the England player most likely to want the ball in the final third. Lovely cross to the far post set up Dele Alli to score England’s second.

Dele Alli 6/10: The only England player who didn’t grow into the first half, he looked low on confidence and gave away possession cheaply on several occasions. However, he popped up when it counted to double England’s lead: his far post header left Robin Olsen no chance in Sweden’s goal. First man replaced by manager Gareth Southgate.

Raheem Sterling 7/10: His pace caused problems for Sweden’s defence all afternoon – he was perhaps the Three Lions’ brightest attacking threat – but once again his final product was lacking. Twice he was put through one-on-one with the goalkeeper (one was later ruled out for offside) but he fluffed his lines on both occasions. Still has only two England goals.

Harry Kane 6/10: Always a threat at set pieces but struggled to get involved in general play. The Spurs striker was forced to come deeper and deeper to receive the ball, leaving Sterling to make the runs in behind with no end product.

Substitutes:

Fabian Delph 6/10: Came on for Alli in the 76th minute with England 2-0 up. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Eric Dier n/a: Got five minutes at the end as Henderson was given a spell by Southgate.

Marcus Rashford n/a: Injury time replacement for Sterling
