Red Sox top prospect Groome needs Tommy John surgery
The Boston Red Sox have lost another top prospect for a significant portion of time.
Boston announced on Wednesday that 2016 first-round pick Jay Groome needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the 2018 season.
Groome is currently Boston's number three overall prospect and the number 85 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com.
The 19-year-old missed a significant portion of time last season with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow and had yet to throw a pitch in a game in 2018.

Groome joins Michael Chavis as Red Sox prospects expected to be out for the near future.
Chavis, Boston's number one overall prospect and the number 78 prospect in all of baseball, was suspended for 80 games before the season for testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
