Olympic champion Van Avermaet wins Tour de Yorkshire

Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet won the Tour de Yorkshire general classification, while Mark Cavendish endured a difficult week.

BMC Racing's Van Avermaet trailed Magnus Cort Nielsen by 10 seconds at the start of Sunday's finale, but he did not require a stage victory to clinch the overall win as he led a chase behind winner Stephane Rossetto.

Cort Nielsen pipped Van Avermaet on day two and then finished second 24 hours later, but his hard work was undone as he lost touch with the peloton on the final day.

Cavendish was the obvious favourite for the two sprint stages, but Harry Tanfield triumphed on the opening day.

And Cavendish was over eight minutes off the pace on Saturday when Max Walscheid won ahead of Cort Nielsen at Scarborough, saying: "It has been a shock to the system, having had so little racing this year."
