Justify remains undefeated with Kentucky Derby victory
Pre-race favourite Justify won the 144th edition of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
On a rain-soaked day in the Bluegrass State, Justify was able to overcome the sloppy conditions to remain undefeated.
Justify finished clear of Good Magic and Audible for a fourth victory in four starts, earning trainer Bob Baffert his fifth career Kentucky Derby triumph.
"He got away clean and then I thought we had a chance," Baffert told NBC Sports after the race. "We had to get away, and then [Jockey] Mike [Smith] took his time and I knew it had been a couple hot days and when I saw that 22 and change I thought, 'Wow, that's really fast,' but...he was doing it easy and him and American Pharoah and Marygate, these horses are cut from a different...they're so great and it took a different horse to do what he did today."
Jockey Mike Smith earned his first career Derby win. He was also aboard Giancomo in his victory at Churchill Downs in 2015.
"He's got that 'it' factor," Smith told NBC Sports. "He's just so above average, you know, he's got unbelievable talent and then he's got a mind to go with it."
