BREAKING NEWS: Browns select Mayfield with first overall pick
The Cleveland Browns have chosen their quarterback of the future, selecting Baker Mayfield with the first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Cleveland's selection with the top pick has been the subject of mystery throughout the pre-draft process, but a report on Thursday indicated Mayfield would be the pick.
And the Browns duly went with the former Oklahoma star, with USC's Sam Darnold having previously been seen as the favorite to have his name called first.
Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy in his final season with Oklahoma in 2017, completing 70 per cent of his passes for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns with just six interceptions and leading them to the College Football Playoff semi-finals, where they lost 54-48 in double overtime in the Rose Bowl against Georgia.
He will now be tasked with helping the Browns back from their lowest hour, Cleveland having become only the second team in NFL history to go 0-16 last season.
But he will likely not have to start straight away, with Tyrod Taylor set to be handed the reins to the offense in 2018 after Cleveland traded for the former Buffalo Bills starter in March.
However, once he sees the field Mayfield will be expected to reproduce the fantastic performances he delivered at Oklahoma as the Browns seek to end their prolonged spell of NFL obscurity.
