Hayne appoints Derrick Rose's attorney to defend him against rape allegations
Jarryd Hayne has appointed Mark Baute, the attorney who successfully represented NBA star Derrick Rose, as the rugby league player prepares to defend himself against rape allegations in a civil case in the United States.
Hayne, who returned to Parramatta Eels after leaving Gold Coast Titans at the end of last season, faced the media on Wednesday in a news conference dominated by the issue of a civil suit filed against the 29-year-old NRL back in Santa Clara, California, last month.
In the suit, a woman identified as 'J.V.' alleges she was raped by Hayne during his time with NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers in December 2015.
Hayne "unequivocally and vehemently" denied the allegations in a statement released by Australian law firm, Madison Marcus.
The matter was reported to the San Jose Police Department in May 2016, but a criminal case was ultimately dropped following investigations, with the District Attorney ruling "there was not enough evidence to prove the crime of rape beyond a reasonable doubt".
In October 2016, NBA point guard Rose and his friends were cleared by a federal jury of rape in a civil trial after being defended by Baute.
Madison Marcus on Wednesday announced the attorney had been retained as Hayne's legal representative in the United States.
"Mr Hayne is innocent and will ask a United States jury to find him innocent," Baute said in a joint statement.
Facing reporters after a pre-season training session, Hayne said: "It's just one of those things you have to go through.
"You've got to fight through a bit of adversity. This is the situation I'm in. We'll go through it.
"We just need to let the justice system do what the justice system's meant to do.
"I've denied the allegations, I think I've made that pretty clear through my lawyers."
Asked about the impact of the allegations and the subsequent media attention on his family, Hayne added: "It's been tough for them, it's been pretty emotional, seeing them get ambushed. That sort of thing was pretty disappointing and hard to watch."
In the statement released by Madison Marcus, Hayne was quoted as saying: "I confirm that I unequivocally and vehemently deny the allegations made against me and I will be vigorously defending the matter."
