Career best for Lakmal in Sri Lanka rout

Suranga Lakmal posted career-best one-day international figures as Sri Lanka cruised to a seven-wicket win over India.

India won the Test series 1-0, but the tourists ended their wait for a win in the first of three 50-over matches in emphatic fashion.

Sri Lanka won the toss and put India - without the resting Virat Kohli - into bat in Dharamsala and that decision paid off as Lakmal took 4-13 with four maidens from 10 overs, the hosts skittled for 112.

And Sri Lanka needed just 20.4 overs to chase down their target, Upul Tharanga's 10 fours doing the damage in his 49.

After Angelo Mathews trapped Shikhar Dhawan for a duck, Lakmal ripped through the heart of the India batting line-up.

India were able to score just 16 runs as Lakmal dismissed captain Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey.

Wicketkeeper MS Dhoni proved something of a steadying influence with his 65, hitting 10 fours and a pair of sixes, but the fact Kuldeep Yadav - who added 19 off 25 - served as his best partner with a stand of 41, was indicative of India's issues with the bat.

Dhoni sliced to the cover boundary to end India's innings and, though Danushka Gunathilaka and Lahiru Thirimanne managed one run between them as Sri Lanka stumbled to 19-2, Tharanga (49 off 46), Mathews (25 not out) and Niroshan Dickwella (26no) ensured they recovered and won with 176 balls left.

Sri Lanka will aim to clinch the three-match series in Mohali on Tuesday.
