Hitchcox makes up for Eden absence in thrilling Castleford win

Updated:

Jy Hitchcox ensured star winger Greg Eden's absence was not too sorely felt as leaders Castleford Tigers ended the Super League regular season with a thrilling 32-24 victory at Catalans Dragons.

Eden has accumulated a whopping 34 tries this campaign, but was ruled out of the trip to Perpignan after sustaining a shoulder injury in the win against Salford Red Devils last time out, though he is expected to return for the Super 8s.

Hitchcox deputised and touched down twice, the second a brilliant acrobatic finish in the corner, as Castleford secured a 12th straight Super League triumph.

The Tigers charged into an early lead with Zak Hardaker adding to Hitchcox's opener, but Lucas Albert, Tony Gigot and Fouad Yaha sent Catalans into the break with a two-point lead.

Greg Minikin latched onto his own grubber to send Castleford back in front, but the Dragons regained the lead 12 minutes from time when a penalty try was awarded by the video referee after Hardaker got a boot to the ball as Vincent Duport attempted to ground in the in-goal area.

But Hitchcox flew over in the left corner and was almost vertical when he touched down, with Paul McShane finishing the job in the closing stages.
