Westley to make England debut in third Test, Malan also called up

Tom Westley will make his England debut against South Africa in the third Test at The Oval and Dawid Malan has also been included in a 13-man squad.

Essex batsman Westley will replace the injured Gary Ballance (fractured finger) at number three when England attempt to respond to their drubbing at Trent Bridge, which brought the tourists level at 1-1.

Westley scored a century for England Lions against the Proteas last month and averages 53.11 for County Championship Division One leaders Essex this season.

Malan is the other batsman to be given a first Test call-up, having scored a rapid 78 in his Twenty20 international debut against South Africa in June.

The left-hander will get his chance if England opt to go with an extra batsman. Paceman Mark Wood has been passed fit following concerns he may miss out with a heel problem.

There is no place in the squad for the uncapped Mark Stoneman, who was strongly tipped for a first call-up on his home ground.

England squad: Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Liam Dawson, Keaton Jennings, Dawid Malan, Toby Roland-Jones, Ben Stokes, Tom Westley.
