Mark O'Meara might want to go into fortune telling once he is done with golf.

The 1998 champion, who got the 146th Open Championship underway on Thursday, predicted a 65 was possible on day one at Royal Birkdale.

And his words proved prescient as Americans Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Matt Kuchar all posted that score to share the lead at five under after 18 holes.

Spieth's round pleased one spectator who found a fashionable - or unfashionable depending on your taste - way to show his support for the Texan, while Rory McIlroy received plenty of backing in Southport.

McIlroy produced a highly impressive recovery on the back nine to keep himself in contention - ending the day six shots off the pace.
