Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen is set for an 18th year with Cronulla Sharks after agreeing a one-year deal with the NRL premiers.
Gallen last month announced that he will not be calling time on his career at the age of 35.
And Sharks coach Shane Flanagan on Friday announced that the long-serving skipper is poised to sign a contract extension.
"He'll definitely play again next year," Flanagan said.
"We're well and truly down the track of talking to his management and that'll be resolved in the next couple of weeks.
"We said to Gal that when the time was right and he felt it was right and he was playing well and he wanted to play again, then we'd do it.
"We're not looking at his birth certificate. The way he plays and trains is the most important thing for us."
