Nadal reaches French Open semis as Carreno Busta retires

Updated:

Rafael Nadal's bid for a 10th French Open title edged closer to fruition on Wednesday as Pablo Carreno Busta retired from their quarter-final match through injury.

Carreno Busta failed to win a single game on his own serve, but broke Nadal twice to lose the opening set 6-2.

The world number 21 then left court Court Philippe Chatrier for treatment, returning with heavy strapping on his side amid reports of an abdominal issue.

Carreno Busta - playing his maiden grand slam quarter-final - continued to struggle and was 2-0 down in the second set when he decided to call it a day.

Nadal will face the winner of the last-eight match between Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals.

The all-Spanish clash between Nadal and Carreno Busta had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, but was postponed due to the wet weather.
