Late Burgess try earns Wigan dramatic draw
A last-gasp Joe Burgess try earned Wigan Warriors a 24-24 draw with Warrington Wolves as day one of the Super League's Magic Weekend ended with an epic tussle in a rematch of last season's Grand Final.
Warrington looked to be staring down the barrel of defeat when Liam Marshall recorded his second hat-trick against them this season, but Tony Smith's men showed great resolve to get back into the contest through quickfire scores from Tom Lineham and Stefan Ratchford. And Warrington went ahead for the first time through a converted Jack Hughes try against his former club with six minutes left.
But Burgess ensured Marshall's heroics - his second try coming after he intercepted on his own line and went the length of the field - did not count for nothing by showing great composure to confidently leap and pluck Sean O'Loughlin's kick from the air to ground.
George Williams had the chance to win it with the conversion, but the narrow angle proved too much and the points were shared.
Tommy Makinson's spectacular try just after the hour mark proved the stand-out moment as St Helens cantered to a 45-0 win over a Hull FC side that could have gone top with a victory.
Makinson took a kick directly under his own posts before embarking on a jinking run that saw him go all the way up the pitch and get over at the opposite end, showing great determination to claw for the line as he fended off a last-gasp tackle.
In truth, the game was long over as a contest before Makinson's moment of quality thanks in part to two tries from Alex Walmsley.
Regan Grace also took the chance to impress new coach Justin Holbrook with a double of his own in the final 10 minutes, the first following a sensational backward hand-off from Mark Percival.
Wakefield Trinity got the Magic Weekend under way with a 34-12 defeat of bottom side Widnes Vikings, who deployed Rangi Chase for the first time since he joined on loan from Castleford Tigers.
Scott Grix and Ben Jones-Bishop helped themselves to a brace each as Chris Chester's men made it three wins on the spin in the league.
