Manly Sea Eagles full-back Tom Trbojevic has been ruled out for up to eight weeks with ankle and knee injuries, making him a huge doubt for State of Origin.
Trbojevic sprained the MCL in his left knee and injured his left ankle during his team's 24-14 loss to the Brisbane Broncos.
The 20-year-old was hurt in a tackle by David Mead on Saturday, with fears he could miss the rest of the NRL season.
But while scans on Monday were better than expected, Trbojevic still faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines.
"We feel extremely lucky given the nature of the mid-air tackle as it had the potential to be a lot worse," Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett said.
"To lose Tom for up to eight weeks is very disappointing. However, we aim to continue to play well and improve our position on the table.
"Tom will now begin his rehabilitation program with the Manly medical staff."
Trbojevic was expected to be part of New South Wales' squad for Origin, beginning May 31.
While he will miss the opening two games, he could be a chance of playing in the third and final clash in Brisbane on July 12.
