Updated:

Cronulla Sharks chairman Damian Keogh has stepped aside after allegations of drug possession.

Keogh, 55, was reportedly charged over drug possession after being searched on Friday.

In a brief statement on Saturday, the Sharks said: "Our club advises that chairman Damian Keogh has stepped aside in his role to allow him to address allegations of possession of an illegal substance.

"Given the challenging personal nature of this matter, Damian is not currently available for comment."

Keogh, a former basketballer who played for numerous clubs in the NBL and represented Australia at the Olympics, took the reins at the Sharks in 2013.
