Greinke guides Diamondbacks, Thames homers again

Updated:

A fine start from Zack Greinke and a Chris Owings grand slam guided the Arizona Diamondbacks in MLB, while Eric Thames homered yet again.

Greinke struck out 11 in six innings, limiting the San Diego Padres to six hits and no walks as he lowered his ERA to 2.93 in a 7-6 win, while Owings blasted a grand slam in the fifth.

Thames made it 10 home runs this season by belting two more in the Milwaukee Brewers' 11-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Chicago Cubs thrashed the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-3, the Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 and the Minnesota Twins edged the Texas Rangers 3-2.

The Chicago White Sox crushed the Kansas City Royals 12-1 and the Colorado Rockies had an 8-4 win over the Washington Nationals, while the Los Angeles Angels (2-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays) and San Francisco Giants (2-1 over the Los Angeles Dodgers) edged to wins.

DAVIDSON IN FORM

White Sox third baseman Matt Davidson continued his hot start to the season, falling a triple shy of the cycle with four RBIs as Chicago thrashed the Royals. Davidson is batting .368 this season.

THAMES PUNISHES REDS

Brewers slugger Thames blasted his MLB-leading 10th home run of the season and his seventh against the Reds alone.

KUHL STRUGGLES

Pirates starter Chad Kuhl entered Monday's matchup with the Cubs with a 2.60 ERA, but after allowing nine runs on eight hits in just 1.2 innings of work, Kuhl's ERA jumped to 6.63 this season. Kuhl allowed four walks in the five-out performance.

RIVALS CLASH

Baseball's greatest rivalry renews as the New York Yankees (11-7) look to continue their solid start to the season and end a losing slump against the Boston Red Sox (11-8). The Yankees are 9-14 against the Red Sox in the past 23 games, but may be catching their rivals at the right time as Tuesday's starter Rick Porcello (5.32 ERA) has struggled in April and Dustin Pedroia's status is unclear for the series opener.
