Chernova stripped of Olympic bronze after further doping violation

Updated:

The IOC has stripped Russian heptathlete Tatyana Chernova of her bronze medal won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to a further doping violation.

In November last year, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Chernova must hand back her 2012 Olympic bronze and 2011 World Championship gold after it was revealed in 2015 a banned substance had been found in her system from a test in 2009.

On Monday, the IOC released a statement declaring that re-testing of Chernova's samples from Beijing revealed the prohibited substance turinabol.

According to the IOC's statement, Chernova had been found "to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008."
