Teenager Vondrousova defies the odds to win Bienne title

Updated:

Teenage outsider Marketa Vondrousova claimed the first WTA title of her fledgling career by beating Anett Kontaveit in the Ladies Open Biel Bienne final.

Qualifier Vondrousova dumped top seed Barbora Strycova out to reach her maiden final and rose to the occasion in Switzerland on Sunday, winning 6-4 7-6 (8-6) to cap a remarkable week.

The 17-year-old Czech, ranked 233rd in the world, saved 13 break points and four set points in the second before going on to edge a tie-break to take the title.

Kontaveit, also playing her first WTA final, was left to rue missed opportunities as she came up short against the surprise package.

Vondrousova secured the solitary break of the first set to lead 4-3 and fought back from 0-40 down when serving to take the opener.

Estonian Kontaveit, back inside the top 100 after reaching the third round of the Miami Open, put that behind her to win the first two games of the second set.

Vondrousova broke back immediately and saved two set points to force a breaker, in which she fought back from 6-4 down to triumph.
