Roberts treble leaves Titans shell-shocked, Roosters and Bulldogs win

James Roberts completed his hat-trick with a dramatic late try as Brisbane Broncos inflicted more anguish on Gold Coast Titans by winning a thrilling NRL derby 24-22 on Friday.

The Titans looked set to end a 10-year wait for a victory at Suncorp Stadium when they led by two points following a converted Kane Elgey try nine minutes from time.

There was a final twist, though, with the magnificent Roberts racing away for a treble after Matt Gillett charged down Elgey's kick with just two minutes to play.

It was another bitter pill to swallow for a Titans side that was beaten by the Broncos in the Finals last year and have now lost four in a row.

The Titans had lost their previous five games against their rivals, but the superb Anthony Don darted away for the opening try after a magnificent back-of-the-hand pass from Tyrone Roberts and a converted Ryan James score put them 12-0 up.

James Roberts touched down twice in the space of 10 minutes for Wayne Bennett's men, but a clever kick from Don enabled Chris Grevsmuhl to add a third Titans try to make it 16-10 at the break.

The Broncos were in front for the first time when Anthony Milford scored a stunning breakaway try after Kodi Nikorima had gone over, but Elgey silenced the majority of a huge crowd when he got on the end of a superb no-look pass from Ash Taylor to score.

Taylor added the extras against his former club to give the Titans a two-point advantage, but Roberts had the final say after Gillett put the pressure on Elgey and David Mead was alert at the death to prevent the strugglers from snatching it.

There was a 12-point haul for Michael Gordon as Sydney Roosters responded to back-to-back defeats by winning 24-6 at bottom side Newcastle Knights

Joseph Manu, Luke Keary and Mitchell Pearce also went over the whitewash for the Roosters, who welcomed Sio Siua Taukeiaho back from injury.

Canterbury Bulldogs have now won four of their last five matches after scored 16 unanswered points in the second half to see off South Sydney Rabbitohs 24-9.
