Wigan Warriors centre Oliver Gildart is set to spend up to the next three months on the sidelines after suffering a "serious back injury" following a tackle from Leeds Rhinos' Brett Ferres.
Gildart sustained the blow in Friday's 26-18 Super League loss to the Rhinos, with Warriors coach Shaun Wane outlining the extent of the injury on Monday.
"He's seeing a neurologist," Wane said. "It's a serious back injury and he'll be out for two to three months.
"Our only concern is making sure Oli is good and making sure his family is looked after, and we manage this serious injury as best we can."
Any possible charge for Ferres is due to be decided on Monday by the Rugby Football League's (RFL) match review panel.
"I just want the RFL to deal with it, that's their job, my job is to make sure we beat Castleford on Thursday," added Wane.
Ferres tweeted after the match, saying: "I would never intentionally want to hurt a player and put them in an uncomfortable position. I apologised to @OliverGildart3 and hope he's okay."
