Federer sees off Tiafoe in Miami opener

Updated:

Roger Federer moved into the third round of the Miami Open with a straight-sets victory over teenager Frances Tiafoe on Saturday.

Federer was a class apart as he won the BNP Paribas Open last week and the Swiss great started his quest to claim a 91st career singles title by beating qualifier Tiafoe 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.

The 18-time grand slam champion was only broken once at Indian Wells - by Stan Wawrinka in the final - and produced another commanding service display to set up a meeting with Juan Martin del Potro or Robin Haase.

World number 101 Tiafoe won only three points on the Federer serve in the first set before losing a tie-break and although the 19-year-old broke in the opening game of the second, that was not a sign of things to come.

Federer raised his game, hitting back straight away and going on to seal victory in just 64 minutes as he aims to win this tournament for the first time in 11 years.
