Veith opts for surgery to boost Olympic chances

Updated:

Anna Veith will miss the rest of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup to undergo surgery on her knee in an attempt to be fully fit for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The Austrian has endured a torrid couple of years after she tore two ligaments and the patellar tendon in her right knee in a training crash in October 2015.

She only returned to the World Cup circuit in Semmering in December, and was back on the podium last month with a third-place finish in the super-G at Cortina d'Ampezzo.

At the recent Alpine World Ski Championships in St Moritz Veith struggled to make an impact on her two events as she came 22nd in the giant slalom, and failed to finish the super-G.

And those disappointments will be her final action of the current season after she opted to undergo an operation on her left knee to clear up a long-standing patellar tendon problem.

Hey there, no good news today. Talked to the doctors, had another MRI and the result is - I have to undergo surgery. This time on my left knee, where I have been fighting against patellar tendon problems for years now. Not being able to ski without pain anymore. So season is over for me. This surgery is the only chance to continue living my dream. To ski the way I want to do it, competing and being part of the olympics again. And that is what I absolutely want... Surgery will take place already tuesday - I keep you updated as soon as everything is done. #comebackstronger #livelifetothefullest #goforit #decisionmade Hey Leute... keine guten News heute. #comebackstronger #livelifetothefullest #goforit #decisionmade
