Newcastle Knights have signed experienced forward Anthony Tupou on a one-year deal and expect Pauli Pauli to return within three months.
Former Australia international Tupou spent the 2016 season at Wakefield Trinity but left in December to return to Australia.
Knights coach Nathan Brown is excited to add a player with 234 games of NRL experience, after his youthful side finished bottom of the ladder last year.
"We're very pleased to bring Anthony to the Club ahead of the 2017 season," Brown said.
"He has a wealth of experience in this competition and will be able to assist in the development of our younger forwards."
Newcastle also announced on Wednesday that Pauli has commenced "off-feet cardio training" after dislocating his hip in a car accident last month.
Pauli is expected to return to action in approximately 10 weeks.
Rory Kostjasyn, a key summer recruit for the Knights, has undergone the first of two operations on a throat injury and is likely to be sidelined for six weeks.
