Capitals shutout Kings, shootout success for Oilers

The Washington Capitals proved too strong for the Los Angeles Kings, easing to a 5-0 success and a third shutout of the season for Philipp Grubauer.

Although much of North America was preoccupied with the build-up to Super Bowl LI on Sunday, there was still the matter of three NHL fixtures to attend to, with wins for the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers.

The Capitals' victory - courtesy of goals from Lars Eller, Marcus Johansson, Brett Connolly, T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams - was their ninth consecutive home triumph. The Eastern Conference leaders have the best record in the NHL, with 78 points.

Elsewhere, the Oilers prevailed 1-0 on penalties over the Montreal Canadiens following a goalless 60 minutes, Leon Draisaitl proving the match-winner for the visitors.

Goals were certainly not in short supply at Madison Square Garden, where the Rangers edged the Calgary Flames 4-3 in a feisty encounter which saw Pavel Buchnevich and Kris Versteeg spend time in the penalty box for fighting in the third period, with Kevin Klein and Michael Ferland following suit less than five minutes later.
