Neck injury rules Nel out of Six Nations

Updated:

Scotland will be without prop Willem Nel for the Six Nations after damaging an intervertebral disc in his neck playing for Edinburgh last weekend.

Nel sustained the injury during Edinburgh's 23-18 European Challenge Cup victory over Harlequins, the 30-year-old leaving the field before half-time.

He was still named in Vern Cotter's squad for the upcoming Six Nations - which sees Scotland open with a home clash against Ireland - but has been ruled out following an examination.

"A MRI scan on Wednesday at Spire Murrayfield Hospital revealed that the tighthead prop damaged an intervertebral disc in his neck during a significant collision in his club's European Challenge Cup win over Harlequins," a Scotland statement read.

"Nel will now have a second specialist assessment this Monday to consider his programme of recovery, including whether corrective surgery is required."

Since making his Scotland debut in August 2015, Nel has won 15 caps and scored two tries.
