Alex Hales will play no further part in England's tour of India after suffering a fracture to his right hand during the second one-day international in Cuttack on Thursday.
The 28-year-old was hurt as he attempted to take a catch at Barabati Stadium, where India prevailed by 15 runs in a high-scoring encounter to open up an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
Although Hales opened the batting in England's ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of 382, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Friday that he will miss the third ODI and the subsequent Twenty20 matches against India.
An ECB statement read: "Hales sustained the injury attempting a catch in the outfield and jarred his hand on the ground.
"He will return to England on Saturday and will see a hand surgeon next week.
"England will announce Hales' replacement in the IT20 squad for the three-match series against India, starting on 26 January, in due course."
The third ODI between India and England takes place in Kolkata on Sunday.
