Uncapped pair Berghan and Du Preez named in Scotland's Six Nations squad

Updated:

The recalled Matt Scott has been named in Scotland's Six Nations squad, along with uncapped Edinburgh pair Simon Berghan and Cornell Du Preez.

Scott was not selected for the November internationals but the centre, who has scored 12 tries in 18 appearances for Gloucester this season, is now back in the fold.

South Africa-born back-row Du Preez, capped by the Springboks at Under-20 level, became eligible for Scotland duty last year following three years of residency, while Berghan, originally from New Zealand, qualifies through his grandfather.

Scotland are awaiting the results of a scan that will determine the availability of Berghan's fellow Edinburgh prop Willem Nel following a neck injury sustained in the European Challenge Cup victory over Harlequins last Saturday.

"It's a well-balanced and exciting group that have played a lot of rugby together, know each other well and are ambitious to do well in a Scotland jersey," head coach Vern Cotter said in a statement.

"I think if we get our mindset right we can be competitive and push for wins in every game in this campaign."

Scotland, who open their Six Nations campaign at home to Ireland on February 4, recorded victories over Italy and France in last year's Six Nations.
