Earle not allowed to appeal against gouging ban

George Earle of Cardiff Blues has failed in his attempt to appeal against an eight-week suspension.

Lock Earle was banned until February 13 after being sent off for making contact with the eyes or eye area of Bath's Tom Ellis in a 38-3 European Challenge Cup defeat at The Rec last month.

Blues head coach Danny Wilson was adamant the incident was accidental and Earle requested the sanction be reviewed, albeit without a personal hearing.

However, according to a statement released by European Professional Club Rugby on Monday, an independent appeal committee decided not to allow the appeal to take place, meaning the full sentence must be served.

The next Cardiff match Earle will be available for is a Pro12 meeting with Benetton Treviso on February 18.
