Farhaan Behardien will captain a much-changed South Africa team in the Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka as several Proteas stars enjoy a rare break.
Regular captain Faf du Plessis and team-mates Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada are among those omitted from the group for three matches in the shortest format, starting with a game at SuperSport Park in Centurion on January 20.
Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw and David Wiese are also missing after moving to English county cricket, with six uncapped players called up.
"We have decided to rest some of our key senior players for this series," convener of selectors Linda Zondi said in a statement.
"This is the last chance we have to do this as the ODI series that follows is an important part of our build-up to the Champions Trophy tournament in England in the middle of the year.
"Those senior players who are involved in the Indian Premier League will be playing non-stop from now until the end of August with the tours coming up to New Zealand and England in addition to the ICC event."
Along with Behardien, David Miller, Imran Tahir, Aaron Phangiso are the only survivors from the squad that exited the World Twenty20 in India in the group stage last year.
