Pliskova and Cornet through to Brisbane final

Karolina Pliskova succeeded where world number one Angelique Kerber failed by beating Elina Svitolina and will face Alize Cornet in the Brisbane International final.

World number one Kerber was dumped out by Svitolina at the quarter-final stage, but third seed Pliskova had no such trouble as she wrapped up a 6-2 6-4 win in just over an hour.

Pliskova, beaten by Kerber in the final of the US Open last year, did not allow Svitolina a break of serve and came up with seven aces in a commanding semi-final display.

The world number six from the Czech Republic broke twice in the first set and once in the second to ensure she will face the unseeded Cornet in her 17th WTA final.

Cornet made it through after Garbine Muguruza retired from their last-four match in the first set due to a thigh injury and fatigue.

Muguruza was unable to move freely or generate her usual power and shook hands when trailing 4-1, but the French Open champion said her participation in the Australian Open is not in doubt.

Cornet's run to the final guaranteed that she will be seeded at the Australian Open.
