Davis Love III will find himself out of action for the next three months after breaking his right collarbone in three places while snowboarding.
Love's manager Mac Barnhardt confirmed his client was injured while on vacation with his son Dru - a senior on Alabama's golf team - in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Love had surgery on Thursday in Birmingham, Ala., with doctors inserting a plate and eight screws to repair the fracture.
"Davis said, 'I committed the cardinal sin of following Dru down the mountain,'" Barnhardt told the Golf Channel.
The 2012 and 2016 US Ryder Cup captain had been slated to play in next week's Sony Open in Honolulu but will instead be sidelined from the Tour for about 12 weeks, doctors estimate.
That timeline would put him back just about in time for the Masters in April.
