Chisnall sees off Rodriguez challenge

Updated:

Seventh seed Dave Chisnall came through an exhausting PDC World Darts Championship first-round encounter with Rowby-John Rodriguez, edging the Austrian 3-2 at Alexandra Palace.

Rodriguez showed in the first five legs that he was not just there to make up the numbers, winning 3-2 to claim the first set, before Chisnall upped the ante to take the second 3-1.

Chisnall then appeared to be cruising to victory as he also took the third set 3-1, but back came Rodriguez again, tying the match at 2-2.

The more experienced Chisnall eventually overcame Rodriguez, though, clinching a one-sided final set without dropping a leg to secure his passage to the second round.

Last year's semi-finalist Jelle Klaasen will join Chisnall in the next round, though his 3-1 defeat of Jeffrey de Graaf in the day's opening match was rather more straightforward, as he rarely looked in trouble.

In the second match of the day 20th seed Vincent van der Voort was on the end of something of a shock, losing 3-1 to unseeded Max Hopp, before Kim Huybrechts comfortably beat James Wilson 3-0 to close out the day.
