Sale Sharks director of rugby Steve Diamond claims Denny Solomona was "fired" by Castleford Tigers before sealing his controversial cross-code switch.
The New Zealand-born flyer sealed his move to Sale last week after reportedly resigning from playing rugby league and made his debut in a European Champions Cup defeat to Saracens on Sunday.
Diamond maintains that the Sharks did nothing wrong in their pursuit of the 23-year-old, who scored a record-breaking 40 tries in Super League last season, and now says Castleford - who have threatened legal action - sacked their prized asset.
"It's in the hands of the legal people, but I don't see any problems at this moment," Diamond told BBC North West Tonight.
"I'm confident that we made a substantial offer and it was knocked back.
"For various reasons Denny became available through being fired from Castleford and once he'd been fired we got in touch and signed a contract."
