Ospreys prop Dmitri Arhip is in danger of missing the remainder of the Pro12 season after being ruled out for up to five months with a shoulder injury.
The Moldova international suffered the setback during Ospreys' comprehensive 59-7 European Challenge Cup defeat of Grenoble on Friday, but it took a few days for scans to reveal the full extent of the damage.
After consulting shoulder specialists, it was determined that the 28-year-old will need surgery and following that procedure it is unlikely that he will play a major role again this season, with their final match of the regular Pro12 season at Scarlets on May 6.
Medical performance manager Chris Towers told the club's official website: "Since returning from France at the weekend Dmitri has had scans which have been reviewed with a shoulder specialist at Spire.
"Following discussions the decision was that Dmitri requires surgery, which we hope will take place next week.
"At this early stage we are looking at him being unavailable for a period of four to five months."
