Woods to play alone as Rose withdraws from Hero World Challenge

Updated:

Justin Rose has withdrawn from the Hero World Challenge due to a back injury, meaning Tiger Woods will play his second round alone.

Olympic champion Rose sat bottom of the 18-man leaderboard after carding a two-over 74 in his opening round in the Bahamas, with Woods, playing competitively for the first time since August 2015 due to two back surgeries, just one stroke better off.

The pair were due to tee it up together on Friday, but the Englishman's withdrawal means the 14-time major winner will be alone as he attempts to improve upon a mixed opening round.

Woods started strongly with four birdies in the first eight holes but ended the front nine with a bogey.

The 40-year-old cancelled out a dropped shot on the 11th with a birdie at the 15th, but double bogeys on 16 and 18 left him nine adrift of leader JB Holmes.
