Chiefs dominate Sharks to move up to fourth

Exeter Chiefs moved up to fourth in the Premiership table with a dominant 21-3 victory over Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium on Friday.

The Chiefs climbed above Leicester Tigers, who face rivals Northampton Saints at Welford Road on Saturday, but were unable to make it a bonus-point win following a scoreless second half.

Exeter quickly set about asserting themselves on the out-of-form Sharks, and a powerful driving mall from a line-out on the right wing was rewarded with a penalty try after just eight minutes.

Sale captain Josh Beaumont was yellow carded for his role in that incident, but AJ MacGinty reduced the deficit with a 12th-minute penalty.

That was as good as it got for Steve Diamond's side though, with James Short sent over by Will Chudley, who added to Exeter's tally with their third try in the 35th minute.

Gareth Steenson made it a trio of successful conversions to complete the scoring, with the Sharks unable to get a late consolation despite Michele Campagnaro being sin-binned in the 77th minute.
