Fernandez posthumously named NL Comeback Player of the Year

Late Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez is the recipient of the 2016 National League (NL) Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Fernandez, killed in a boating accident on September 25 along with two friends, was posthumously chosen for the honour in a vote by his peers, announced on Wednesday by the MLB Players Association.

The two-time All-Star was 24 at the time of his death.

After missing most of the 2014 and 2015 seasons due to Tommy John surgery, Fernandez returned to the Marlins this year to post a 2.86 ERA.

He won 16 games, tied for fifth in the NL.

Baltimore Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo was given the award in the American League.
