Otago made it five wins from five in the Mitre 10 Cup as they staged a second-half comeback to beat Tasman.
The Championship Division leaders trailed 27-21 at half-time against a Tasman side second bottom in the Premiership Division.
But three Fletcher Smith penalties tilted the contest in Otago's favour as they triumphed 30-27.
Paul Grant, Craig Millar and Naulia Dawai all crossed for Otago in an enthralling first half, but 12 points from fly-half Marty Banks and tries for Alex Nankivell, David Havili and captain Shane Christie gave Tasman the advantage at the interval.
However, Tasman's indiscipline proved costly in the second 40, the decisive penalty coming late on as they were pinned for offside at the ruck.
Elsewhere in the Championship Division, three first-half tries and a 14-point haul from Bryn Gatland saw North Harbour claim a 29-25 win over Manawatu, who slumped to defeat despite a Ngani Laumape double.
