Eighth seed Tatjana Maria bowed out of the Dalian Women's Tennis Open when she was beaten by Han Xinyun in the first round on Tuesday.
Maria missed out on a place in the main draw at the US Open after losing to Laura Robson in qualifying and the German endured more misery on day one in Dalian, going down 6-4 6-4 to the unseeded Han.
The 121-ranked Maria won only 50 per cent of points on her first serve and was broken five times as Han marched into round two in her homeland.
Liu Fangzhou was a quarter-finalist in the WTA 125K Series event last year last year, but was beaten 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 by Rebecca Peterson on day one of the tournament 12 months later.
Anastasia Pivovarova, Aleksandra Krunic, Ipek Soylu and qualifier Peangtarn Plipuech all avoided early exits.
