Rio 2016: Weightlifter stripped of bronze over doping
Kyrgyz weightlifter Izzat Artykov is the first Rio competitor to be stripped of a medal at the 2016 Games after he won bronze in the men's 69 kilogram competition then returned a positive doping test.
The 22-year-old finished third behind Shi Zhiyong of China and Turkey's Daniyar Ismayilov, but has now been disqualified following the discovery of strychnine in his system.
"The responsibility for the athlete's results management in terms of sanction beyond the Olympic Games Rio 2016 is referred to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF)," explained a statement from the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"The amendment of the official ranking of the men's 69 kg weightlifting competition and the reallocation of the bronze medal is of the responsibility of the IWF and IOC."
Luis Mosquera of Colombia now looks set to inherit the bronze medal following his fourth-place finish.
Artykov was Kyrgyzstan's only medallist of Rio 2016 so far.
